They Use Drugs/Alcohol

This one is pretty obvious, but the fact they are using drugs or alcohol may not be. Typically you can tell when someone is using opioids due to nodding out, marks on their arms and withdrawal symptoms when not taking it. Alcohol, considered far more “normal” among society is easy to obtain and it can be hard to tell if someone is using it too much.

They Are In Denial

If you know that your loved one is using alcohol or drugs in an excessive manner and they completely deny it, it may be a good sign they are addicted. Addiction changes the mind and can result in defensive behavior.

They Are Isolated

Most addicts typically become isolated, as people begin to catch on, ask questions and not help as much. It can cause the addict to retract from normal friendships and family gatherings.

They Experience Financial Problems

Many addicts begin to experience financial problems at some point during their addiction, most of their money is going towards the addiction and it is often hard to hold-down stable employment. This however is not always the case. Functional addicts and alcoholics exist.
